1. Explain the ways in which music videos use representations to create difference (10). Refer to Teenage Dirtbag and Sk8r Boi. To answer this 10 mark question, you need to:

• Identify the two different types of music
• Explain how the lyrics of each track convey the values of the singer (how conformist / rebellious)
• Explain the ways in which the singers’ mise-en-scene (surroundings, costumes, props) are different and why they fit the singer and the lyrics
• Explain how the lighting, colours and editing contribute to the representations.

In teenage dirt bag the song is about love at first sight and it is a very sweet and smooth song with very good flow, camera work and editing. the music video is about a young man who discovers love at first sight and then gets home and passes out, he then gets woken up realising it was all just a still dream. the music video creates difference as it is a lot less rebellious to the music video sk8er boi and it is rather a lot more calming and not as heavy. in teenage dirt bag they use a lot of panning shots which helps show us what is happening on the music video which creates meaning.

in sk8er boi they create meaning by using a lot more of a rebellious music video which shows us how they think the whole world is against them and they think they are isolated in this world. it is rebellious as in half of the music video they are standing on top of cars and doing graffiti and also vandalising which is a very rebellious act and it would annoy most people. this is pure signification of them thinking that the world is against them. this connotes that they will cause a lot of destruction in this music video which would be a very costly act.

3. What is meant by the term Public Service Broadcasting and how does Radio 1 Live Lounge fulfil its PSB remit? (4)

public service broadcasting means that it is meant for the benefit of the general community and not for commercial benefit such as advertising and making lots of money. radio 1 live lounge fulfils its PSB remit as it tells people the news as well as bringing on people into their radio which would benefit the general public.

Media language is used differently in the two magazines. in the Mojo magazine media language represents this rock looking male character who is clearly an old famous rock star. the man is from the band called the cure who were a very famous band. the mojo magazine uses a white background which matches the mans makeup and dress which is very nice to look at as you can really only see his eyes and mouth. Mojo also promotes the other stories they have in their magazine which is very good for their profits as more people are likely to buy it as they can see all of the other stories which will match at least one of their interests as their are lots of different genres of music. the magazine also shows us how much the cure dramatizes their life and their makeup which is a real signification of living on the edge.

in the BBC magazine it is called classical music the magazine is much more formal and smart as it presents its layout in normal colours without nay editing and the clothes the man is wearing is much more formal as well. its layout is much better and much more mature as the man is smiling and its not as out there as the Mojo magazine. The magazine is also pitching a classical music type which will be much more pleasing to an older audience such as grandparents and the Mojo magazine is pitching rock music with bands which will be for an audience such as parents.

In conclusion media language is represented much more formally in BBC magazine rather than the Mojo magazine which is a much more fun and out there magazine with dramatic makeup and rock musicians. In the BBC magazine the music type is classical and the people on it look much more formal and nice.
