Q.3 How far does Cuffs adapt police drama conventions to fit its family audience at 8 p.m. on BBC1?

In your answer you must

  • state what conventions you could expect from most TV police drama
  • analyse the programme's use of genre conventions, making sure that you cover the whole episode (not just the extract played in the exam). This means explaining all the crimes that occur in the episode and everything that the police have to deal with that may be upsetting for viewers.
  • explain who the audience is for Cuffs
  • explain how far the programme adapted conventions
  • draw conclusions about how far the extract adapts the conventions of police drama to fit its scheduling and audience.

Cuffs adapts its police drama to fit into its 8pm audience as it doesn't use gruesome gore or proper violence as there may be children watching and it could thoroughly impact their mental health especially if they're already affected mentally. they also use much tamer language as their younger audience may also be watching again, so therefore they use rude language but not as rude as police officers would be in real life as they are much more violent and furious in real life especially if you dont do what you are told to, they may also use weapons such as tazers and batons which would restrain the offender whereas in Cuffs they only use hand to hand combat in which the police officers usually lose by.

the show also fits in with the 8pm timeslot as it also covers the nudists up on the beach as it can sometimes be bad for children to see explicit content such as naked people as it may effect them in future life. they also fit in with the 8pm timeslot as when the two women are burgling they film him to make it seem like he is raping them whereas that isn't actually happening it is just him trying to arrest a woman for shoplifting.

In conclusion cuffs adapts police drama as they are much tamer with more brutal/reals life issues as the police in cuffs are bullied and played with by the offenders which is very wrong and this is what they are trying to highlight in their 8pm programme.
